ABOUT THE JOURNAL
- The Journal of Economics is a scientific journal and, as such, is a publication platform for research papers of high scientific rigor.
- Its main objective is to disseminate original works resulting from theoretical or empirical scientific research on economic topics among the national and international academic and scientific community, as well as the general public.
- Scope. The Journal of Economics is a peer-reviewed publication with a thematic scope in the field of Economics and includes theoretical and empirical scientific publications that address economic problems from different territorial scales (local, regional, national, and international) and from diverse orthodox and heterodox theoretical-methodological approaches.
- Frequency. The Journal of Economics is published twice a year, biannually. The first issue of each semester, corresponding to the period January-June of a given year, is published at the beginning of the respective period. The issue corresponding to the second semester of the July-December period of a given year is published at the beginning of the respective period.
- The journal is published by the Faculty of Economics of the Autonomous University of Yucatán, Mexico, and is fully funded by the same institution.
- The journal's open access policy is guaranteed through the publication of full-text content via the OJS platform for articles that have passed the rigorous peer-review process. The economics journal does not charge fees for submission, processing, editing, publication, or download of articles. The publication is a non-commercial, open access, diamond-level journal.
- The Economics Journal adheres to the ethical guidelines established by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics).
- Self-archiving. The journal's content will be archived in the institutional repository of the Autonomous University of Yucatán, available on REDI, which is currently under development.
- Digital preservation. The OJS platform's PKP PN system is used for the digital preservation of the publication's content. All issues of the Journal have activated LOCKSS and CLOKSS licenses, which enable the storage and distribution of their content to collaborating libraries through a page on the LOCKSS Publisher Manifesto and the CLOCKSS Publisher Manifesto page.
- The journal is published and funded by the Faculty of Economics of the Autonomous University of Yucatán, with public funds managed by the same institution.
- The Journal of Economics has been published continuously since 1983. It began as a print publication and, since 2012, has published all of its content digitally, completely replacing the print edition in 2015.
- In 2018, it began publishing through the editorial management platform based on the open-source software Open Journal Systems (OJS) from the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). The current version of OJS is 3.4.0.9.
- The official website of the publication is revistaeconomia.uady.mx and it has the electronic ISSN 2395-8715.
- Verification of originality. Submitted articles undergo an initial screening process that includes, among other aspects, an analysis of similarity and use of AI using Turnitin's iThenticate software. Only articles with a similarity and AI usage percentage below 30 percent will proceed to the second round of double-blind external peer review.
- Indexing. The Journal of Economics is indexed in the following databases, directories, and indexes: CONAHCYT, ECONLIT, CLASE, SCIELO, EBSCO, GOOGLE, DOAJ, DIALNET, REDALYC, and LATINDEX.

The conditions for granting the CC BY-NC-SA license are: Attribution (BY): Any reproduction or redistribution of the material must explicitly cite the original authors, the article title, the journal title, the volume, the year, and, where applicable, the URL or DOI of the article. Credit may not be omitted, nor may the work be attributed to someone other than the original authors. NonCommercial (NC): Use of this material for commercial or profit-making purposes is prohibited. This includes its sale, inclusion in paid products or services, and use in advertising or commercial promotion. Use in non-profit academic, educational, and research activities is always permitted. NoDerivatives (SA): Distribution of modified, adapted, or transformed versions of this material is not permitted. Anyone wishing to create a derivative work (translation, adaptation, modified abstract, etc.) must obtain express authorization from the authors and the journal. This condition protects the scientific integrity of the published results. Authors retain copyright to their work and grant the journal the non-exclusive right to publish and distribute it under this license. Authors may deposit and share their article in institutional or subject-specific repositories in accordance with the journal's Self-Archiving Policy.
- The journal will address complaints, grievances, appeals against editorial decisions, or reports related to potential breaches of academic integrity, provided they are submitted in writing, respectfully, and with proper substantiation to the journal's official email address. Requests must state the reason for the grievance, the manuscript or publication involved, and, where applicable, the corresponding evidence. The editorial team will review each case confidentially and impartially and may request clarification from the parties involved or consult the Editorial Committee when deemed necessary. The filing of an appeal does not automatically modify an editorial decision. The resolution will be communicated in writing and will be final within the journal's process.
- The journal may publish corrections, clarifications, editorial notes, or retractions when relevant errors, omissions, ethical issues, or information affecting the academic integrity of a published text are identified. Corrections will be issued when the errors do not invalidate the central arguments of the work. Retractions may be issued when serious misconduct is verified, such as plagiarism, fabrication or manipulation of data, duplicate publication, unauthorized authorship, lack of necessary permissions, or any other conduct that compromises the validity or legitimacy of the publication. All corrections or retractions will be evaluated by the editorial team and, when necessary, by the Editorial Committee. The decision will be communicated to the authors and published prominently on the journal's website, linked to the original text.
- Interoperability Protocol. The OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) interoperability protocol is used, which allows for the automated transfer of metadata between scientific information systems and platforms. Interoperable electronic publication formats such as HTML and XML-JATS are used.
PAPERS AND PEER REVIEW
- The journal includes a section called Original Articles, which features articles resulting from theoretical or empirical research addressing economic issues at different territorial scales (local, regional, national, and international) and from diverse theoretical and methodological approaches.
- The journal publishes papers in Spanish and English.
- Peer Review Policy. The economics journal will only publish papers that meet (1) the format and content requirements: the editorial committee will conduct the initial review of articles according to the guidelines established in the INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS https://revistaeconomia.uady.mx/index.php/reveco/about/submissions, also considering that they are relevant to the journal's thematic coverage, well-structured, meet the consistency requirement, and pass the similarity analysis test using the iThenticate software; and (2) pass the review of two anonymous peer reviewers in their areas of expertise: manuscripts that pass the initial review described in (1) will be sent for double-blind peer review in step (2) to nationally and internationally recognized researchers specializing in the subject matter, who will be responsible for evaluating the received articles based on the journal's evaluation criteria.
- Papers with a favorable review from at least two peer reviewers will be considered for publication in the journal. In the event that one review is favorable and the other unfavorable in the first round of peer review, a third and final review will be required.
- Authors will be notified whether their manuscript has been accepted or rejected for publication within a maximum of three months from the date of receipt.
- The types of papers published in the journal are: empirical studies, review articles, theoretical articles, and methodological articles. For the characteristics of each type, see the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Second Edition, Mexico: Editorial El Manual Moderno, 2002, pp. 4–6. Articles are published in PDF, HTML, EPUB, and XML-JATS formats.
- The journal covers a broad range of topics, including all economic subdisciplines, provided they are the product of rigorous empirical, applied, or theoretical work, and are therefore considered scientific. For the classification of articles within any of the economic subdisciplines, the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) classification code will be used.
- Accepted and published papers may not be submitted for further evaluation. Works published in the journal must be original and not have been published in other journals or by other means. To this end, a signed letter of originality, which will be provided by the journal editor, must be submitted. The letter of originality will state that the article submitted for evaluation is original and the product of scientific, theoretical, or empirical research.
- In addition, the journal publishes a special issue section that includes papers on a particular theme, coordinated by a guest editor, a leading national and international expert in their field of research. Special issues are organized to disseminate research advances in an emerging or established field.
- It also includes a book review section, when material is available for publication.
- Papers published in the original articles section and special issue are rigorously evaluated by double-blind peer review. Reviews are not peer-reviewed.
- The evaluation criteria for manuscripts are based on the following parameters: originality, quality and contribution to the advancement of the discipline, orientation of the line of argument toward substantiating the essential propositions, consistency and structure, correspondence of the methodology with the research objectives and theoretical reflection, sufficient and novel bibliography, and use of tables and graphs. Review format.
PUBLICATION ETHICS
Editorial Team
- The editorial team will manage the processes of submission, review, evaluation, and publication in accordance with the journal's guidelines. Manuscripts will be evaluated based on their academic relevance, quality, originality, and adherence to editorial criteria, without discrimination based on origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, institutional affiliation, political stance, or other personal circumstances.
- Information regarding received manuscripts will be treated confidentially and shared only with those involved in the editorial process. Those participating in the editorial process must refrain from intervening in cases where a conflict of interest exists.
- The editor (scientific editor) is responsible for the content published in the journal. The editor's work must be guided by international publication standards and ensure the quality of the published material. The editor is responsible for making the final decision to accept or reject a manuscript for publication. This decision will be based on the reviewers' opinions and compliance with the journal's editorial policies regarding content, subject matter, quality, and publication ethics.
- The editor is committed to ensuring the confidentiality of the article evaluation process. The editor may not reveal the authors' identities to the reviewers, nor may they reveal the reviewers' identities to the authors. Unpublished materials from a received manuscript will not be used in the editor's personal research. Editors must make decisions in accordance with the journal's publication ethics and ensure a fair and appropriate peer-review process.
Referees
- Referees must be specialists in their field, preferably members of the National System of Researchers (for Mexican referees). Foreign referees must be specialists in their field with a substantial body of high-quality scientific output (publication in leading journals).
- The referees' responsibilities include: evaluating articles based on the criteria of originality, article quality, and contribution to the field of study; and documenting the evaluation using the form provided by the corresponding supervisor (journal editor).
- Article Evaluation Criteria. For their task, the reviewers will use a standardized review form, which will include the following sections: title, originality, quality and contribution to the advancement of the discipline, consistency and structure of the objectives, orientation of the line of argumentation toward the substantiation of the essential arguments, correspondence of the methodology with the research objectives and/or theoretical reflection, comments on the article, comments on the author, article accepted without comments, with comments, or rejected, and place and date of review.
- Articles with a favorable review from at least two reviewers will be considered for publication in the journal.
- Reviewers must commit to maintaining the confidentiality of information related to the manuscripts they evaluate and to use it responsibly. Reviewers must evaluate the article with complete objectivity and adherence to scientific criteria. Criticism of the articles must be constructive so that the authors have sufficient information to improve the articles that underwent double-blind peer review. Ideas obtained through peer review should not be used for personal or professional gain. Reviewers should not evaluate manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.
About the Authors
- Authors submitting manuscripts for possible publication in the economics journal must be the product of original, novel scientific research and adhere to publication ethics.
- Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere. A previously published work is defined as follows: a. When the full text has been published in any physical or electronic medium in any language; b. When several paragraphs from manuscripts previously published by at least one of the co-authors are included in the text submitted to the journal; c. When the manuscript submitted to the journal has already been published as part of the extended proceedings of a conference or academic event.
- Authors must properly cite the articles and documents contained in the text and provide complete references for the cited documents, including the DOI. Citations of published works are used when the author has drawn on the ideas of other authors to support their research. The journal does not tolerate plagiarism in any form and it is grounds for rejection of an article.
USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Guiding Principles
- Author. A person who has produced a scientific, literary, or artistic work. Article 12 of the Mexican Federal Copyright Law specifies that this status applies only to natural persons; therefore, AI cannot be considered an author or rights holder.
- Transparency. The author's obligation to declare any use of AI that goes beyond basic linguistic correction.
- Traceability. A description of the tool used (name, version, developer or manufacturer, and, if applicable, the extension), the date, the purpose, and the sections of the work in which AI was used, as outlined in section 4.5.
- Human Responsibility and Oversight. All individuals involved in the editorial process are responsible for the originality and relevance of the content, including content generated or assisted by AI.
- Integrity. All manuscripts will be submitted to similarity detection programs. Plagiarism, fabrication of data or references, and dissemination of false information are prohibited, regardless of whether the content was created by a person or generated by AI.
- Data protection and intellectual property. Incorporating personal data, confidential information, or third-party materials into any AI tool is prohibited without the authorization of the moral rights holder.
- Institutional relevance. The use of AI in UADY journals must be consistent with the University's humanistic and intercultural vocation. In particular, it must safeguard linguistic and cultural diversity, including the Mayan language, as well as the institutional commitment to multilingualism and the well-being of individuals.
Guidelines for authors
- Uses that do not require declaration
- Supportive spelling and grammar correction. For example, correcting subject-verb agreement, punctuation, or typos without altering the content or arguments. If the intervention substantially modifies the wording or the structure of the ideas, it falls under section 4.2 and must be declared.
- Organization of references using bibliographic management software.
- Minor adjustments to formatting or citation style.
- Permitted Uses that Must Be Declared
- Translation of all or parts of the manuscript.
- Substantive reformulation or reorganization of the writing and arguments.
- Support in writing or generating code for data analysis.
- Prohibited Uses
- Producing original analyses, interpretations, or arguments that constitute the author's intellectual contribution.
- Writing, in whole or in part, the central sections of the work without significant human intellectual contribution.
- Inventing data, results, or bibliographic references.
- Generating or altering images, tables, or figures with AI in manuscripts submitted for evaluation, unless that output is the very object of the research or is a declared part of the methodology.
- Simulating human authorship or concealing the true origin of the information.
- Authorship and Citation
AI cannot be listed as an author or co-author, as it assumes no legal responsibilities or obligations. It is also not included in the references, since it does not generate verifiable original knowledge. When appropriate, the tool will be mentioned within the statement of use, according to the conventions of each discipline.
- Statement of Use of AI
When submitting the manuscript, the author will include a statement of use of AI placed before the references and reiterated in the comments field for the platform editor. This statement will indicate the name, version, developer or manufacturer, and, if applicable, the extension of the tool; the date; the purpose; the sections affected; and confirmation that all content has been reviewed and validated. If generative AI was not used, this must be expressly stated. The Appendix provides a template.
Guidelines for Reviewers
- Expert Judgment. The decision regarding publication, as well as any observations and corrections, rests with the reviewer's judgment; AI does not replace it.
- Confidentiality. Manuscripts under review—or any excerpts thereof—will not be uploaded to public AI tools or the cloud, as this would compromise unpublished information.
- Limited Supportive Use. AI is permitted only to refine the language of the review itself, without exposing manuscript content, and this must be disclosed to the editorial team.
- Honesty. Concealing the use of AI in the review process undermines the transparency of peer review and is considered unethical.
Guidelines for the Editorial Team
- Human Decisions. Accepting, rejecting, or requesting changes to a manuscript is the responsibility of qualified editors.
- Support Tools. Automated tools may be used for non-decisional tasks—such as similarity and originality verification or metadata management—with human review of their results.
- Prohibitions. Generative AI will not be used to draft decision letters, opinions, or abstracts of unpublished works.
- Confidentiality. Manuscripts will not be processed using AI tools that could improperly disclose identities or content; concealing the use of AI in editing is unethical.
- Verification of originality. Each journal will disclose on its website the similarity detection software and AI usage it employs, as well as the applicable procedure in the event of a finding.
Consequences of non-compliance
The declared and responsible use of AI is not, in itself, grounds for rejection. However, omitting the declaration or misusing AI may result, depending on the case and in accordance with international best practices, in a request to correct or add to the declaration, rejection of the manuscript at any stage, retraction of the article if the issue is discovered after publication, notification to the reviewing institution in serious cases, and the non-reinstatement of reviewers who violate these rules.
OPEN SCIENCE POLICY
